The Blade Planer Boards: No Matter the Chop, the Blade Won’t Stop

Musky trolling is a key component of a complete and successful musky fishing game plan. The bigger the water, the larger the role trolling plays in consistently putting trophy-class muskies in the net. As a professional musky guide, I rely on trolling as a mainstay in my year-round musky strategy. It not only gives my shoulders a break but also allows me to target muskies beyond the reach of traditional casting methods.
Musky anglers who have invested time in trolling can attest that planer boards are a critical tool. They spread lures away from the boat and enable coverage of areas too treacherous for short-line endeavors.
Over the years, I’ve tested every so-called "musky planer board" on the market—from bulky hunks of orange plastic to the latest innovations. I was more than disappointed and borderline disillusioned with their performance. Some boards crumbled under the pressure of mere eight-inch musky lures, while others slipped beneath the waves, fouling every trolling line in a spread. The results were frustrating.
Fed up with the lackluster performance of mass-produced planer boards several years ago, I set out to build something reliable, stable, and capable of handling modern musky lures. To do this, I had to break the mold of what anglers conventionally view as a planer board. The new design needed to be responsive—not just to the boat pulling it or the lure it towed, but above all, to the water itself. The standard had to rise; a planer board couldn’t simply drag along, tossed about by crashing waves or even a mild chop.
With these factors in mind, I went to the lab to re imagine what a planer board could be—and, more importantly, what it shouldn’t be. After over a decade of sketching, tweaking, and refining, I’m proud to introduce The Blade from Livingston Lures. The Blade represents the pinnacle of planer boards, blending the best elements of our handmade models with perfected precision in every set. Each pair of The Blade Planer Boards is pitch-perfect and ready to tackle any water conditions.
While The Blade effortlessly pulls mega musky lures like fourteen-inch Jakes and twelve-inch Headlocks, it’s equally adept at handling walleye crankbaits or positioning a live presentation in the fall. Tested across every imaginable fishing condition and scenario, its performance surpasses anything else available.
